Cocoa 2026-2027:
realigning crop financing

The cocoa farm-gate price is set at 1,200 FCFA/kg for the 2026-2027 main crop, against 2,800 FCFA at the start of the previous season. Beyond the farmers, the financing structure of the whole sector has to adjust.

Update, 7 October 2026Two developments have occurred since publication. In Ghana, Cocobod set the 2026-2027 producer price at 42,400 cedis per tonne, effective 25 September 2026. In Côte d'Ivoire, a producers' union, SYNAP-CI, began withholding beans on 16 September to contest the price of 1,200 FCFA per kilo; the season was officially launched on 2 October in Daloa. For buyers, cooperatives and exporters, both factors increase uncertainty over volumes collected early in the season, and therefore over the pace at which crop loans are repaid.

A price more than halved in one season

On 1 September 2026, the Government set the guaranteed minimum farm-gate price of cocoa at 1,200 FCFA/kg for the 2026-2027 main crop, and that of coffee at 1,300 FCFA/kg. The cocoa price is the same as the one applied since March 2026 for the mid-crop. It had reached 2,800 FCFA/kg at the opening of the 2025-2026 main crop, before being cut to 1,200 FCFA/kg in March, amid a sharp fall in international prices.

What changes for sector financing

Buyers, cooperatives and exporters finance most of their activity through crop credit: pre-financing purchases, building inventory, transport to the port. The fall in the producer price has three simultaneous effects.

"The lower price reduces tomorrow's financing need, but not yesterday's debt."

Beyond the sector: rural income

The fall in the farm-gate price reduces cash income in producing areas. For companies that sell there (distribution, building materials, services, transport), it is a central parameter of 2027 demand, to be built into forecasts now.

Financial implications

ActorDecision to prepare
Buyers and cooperativesRealign crop credit lines on the new volumes in value; isolate and treat separately the outstanding amounts inherited from the previous season.
ExportersCheck the cover of sales commitments concluded at higher prices and the adequacy of inventory-backed collateral.
Weakened structuresOpen the discussion with banks before a missed payment: a rescheduling negotiated early costs less than a forced restructuring.
Companies in producing areasRevise 2027 sales forecasts and customer credit risk in cocoa-growing regions.

Our reading

For sector players, the 2026-2027 season is first and foremost a balance sheet exercise. The time to realign financing is now, before purchases ramp up, not when cash strain forces an emergency renegotiation.
